Caracciolo Palace di Santobuono
It is a monumental palace in Naples, located in Via Carbonara, in the heart of the city of Naples. The Princes of Caracciolo di Santobuono erected the building in 1584, on the place where an urban castle was previously located, donated by King Roberto d'Angiò to Landolfo Caracciolo in the first decades of the 14th century. The palace, located on a strategic point, was used for city defense: it was in fact close to the door that served the episcopal insula. It was linked to the story of the Neapolitan Republic of Masaniello. It was then plundered and became the seat of Duke of Guisa. In 1692, it was restored again, hosting very remarkable pictures. At the beginning of the following century, the Duke of Elboeuf of Caracciolo inhabited the castle; he was the initiator of the excavations of the cities of Ercolano and Pompeii, while in 1799 the palace also housed the general Jean Étienne Championnet. In 1815, the building was completely abandoned. After it hosted, for a while, the offices of the Police Headquarters. The Palace has two very large portals from which you can access the porch courtyard with pillars in trachytic rock. It has four floors and in the noble floor, there are some traces of a frescoed ceiling. Today the complex has been completely restored, reused and modernized. These interventions have brought to light the ancient structure of the fourteenth century. It is currently used as hotel.
